Cardiovascular Consultants was founded on April 1, 1975, by Walker Beeson, M.D., Savannah's first board-certified cardiologist. He came to Savannah from the Medical College of Georgia to serve as director of cardiology at Memorial Hospital. He is credited with establishing Savannah's first cardiac catheterization lab, performing the region's first coronary arteriogram, and performing Savannah's first angioplasty procedure.

By the 1980s, public education campaigns were beginning to warn people about the risk factors for heart disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and lack of exercise. More lives were being saved thanks to lifestyle changes and advances in cardiovascular care. In 1989, Cardiovascular Consultants established the first electrophysiology program in the region for the treatment of complex arrhythmias. Other medical breakthroughs included heart ultrasound, medications to improve heart health, stents to keep blocked arteries open, sophisticated imaging tests, and cardiac rehabilitation.

In 1989, Mark Jenkins, M.D., FACC, joined the group and established the region's first cardiac electrophysiology program for the treatment of complex arrhythmias. Other medical firsts included the region's first AICD implantation, ablation of cardiac arrhythmias, and biventricular AICD implantation for the treatment of refractory congestive heart failure.

In 2015, we affiliated with Memorial Health and became Memorial Cardiovascular Consultants. Our physicians proudly carry on our legacy of bringing high-quality cardiac services to southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina. We believe that every heart patient deserves exceptional cardiovascular care.
