Memorial Health offers a variety of pregnancy and parenting classes to prepare moms, dads and siblings for the arrival of a new baby.
Basic newborn care, your hospital stay, breastfeeding and newborn safety are all covered in this course. The class meets nine a.m. to noon on a Saturday. You can attend this course any time during your pregnancy.
This two-hour class is designed to educate and support the mother planning to breastfeed. Topics include preparing to breastfeed, basic breastfeeding information, nutrition and a discussion of common concerns. Issues such as family support for the breastfeeding mother, the father’s role in feeding and how to breastfeed and continue your career are also covered. Your support person is encouraged to attend the class with you.
Learn to soothe your baby, enhance attentiveness and improve immune function with hands-on instruction in infant massage. Babies must be at least one month old, but not yet crawling. One-hour private sessions are $50 and available Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Follow-up sessions are $35 per hour. Sessions are held at FitnessOne. Free valet parking is available. This four-session course is for parents expecting twins, triplets or more. An experienced team of mothers with multiples provides information on prenatal care, the multiple birth experience, newborn care and life at home with more than one baby. Online childbirth class
This fully online childbirth course is ideal for busy parents. The Gift of Motherhood is an interactive, web-based program that includes animated illustrations and videos. The class covers childbirth education, labor support, discomforts of pregnancy, understanding labor and birth, labor guide, caring for yourself postpartum and feeding and caring for you newborn. The class costs $50 and can be accessed for up to 90 days. A childbirth educator is available by phone and email to answer your questions.
A yoga instructor specially certified in prenatal yoga leads this weekly class designed to ease the discomforts of pregnancy and keep you fit for childbirth. No previous yoga experience is required. The session of six weekly, one-hour classes is $75. Gift certificates are available. The class is held at FitnessOne.
This course provides an overview of reproductive anatomy and physiology and explains the process of labor and delivery in simple, easy-to-understand terms. Conscious relaxation, breathing techniques and comfort measures to use during labor and delivery are demonstrated. The course also includes a tour of the labor and delivery suites at Memorial Health for women. Prepared Childbirth is offered in two different formats, all-day on a Saturday or in two Monday evening sessions. Register early.
