Memorial's Board of Directors Names Interim CEO

(April 30, 2008) – Memorial Health’s Board of Directors announced today the selection of Charles (Chuck) W. Neumann to serve as Interim CEO of Memorial. Neumann will assume responsibility from Dr. Ramon Meguiar, senior vice president and chief medical officer, who has served as acting CEO since the April 9 departure of former CEO Bob Colvin. The Board of Directors cited Neumann’s impressive record of healthcare management and extensive experience in hospital operations as the primary reason for his selection.

“During this time of transition, it’s vital that we continue to provide the high level of healthcare this community has come to expect from Memorial,” said Karen Pannell, board chairwoman. “Chuck has the expertise and ability to ensure that happens, and we’re extremely pleased that he has accepted this opportunity.”

Neumann has more than three decades in the healthcare industry and extensive expertise in hospital strategy assessment and development and enhancing operations and financial performance of multi-facility organizations. He also specializes in turnaround management, performance improvement, organizational redesign, operations management, and strategic planning.

“I’m honored to accept the board’s offer and this challenge. Memorial’s reputation as an institution of excellence is well-established, and I know the hard-working professionals here are the reason for that reputation. I look forward to working together as we address the financial and administrative issues before us,” said Neumann.

Neumann has worked with multiple healthcare organizations on issues such as financial recovery, improvements in quality outcomes, and physician and patient satisfaction. Since 1989, he has served as principal for the Cambridge Group, Inc. In this role, he has provided advisory, interim management, and consulting services on acquisitions, business strategies and the organizational development of international and domestic healthcare related business initiatives.

From 1999 through 2004, he served as senior vice president of operations for Bon Secours Health Systems, where he provided overall leadership and group coordination for member hospitals in a multistate region. Neumann has also served in executive leadership roles with HCA, including managing director of HCA’s European operations.
He is a board member and shareholder of Hospital Management Italiana; a faculty member of the innovation community of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and a former board member and chairman of the Finance Committee for Bon Secours Health System, United Kingdom.

He holds a bachelor’s of science from the University of Western Michigan and a master’s of public health, administration from the University of Michigan.
