Memorial Enters Contract Negotiations for New President and CEO

(March 26, 2009) - The Board of Directors of Memorial Health announced today that it has voted to enter into contract negotiations with Phillip S. Schaengold, J.D., MBA, FACHE, to become the next president and chief executive officer of Memorial Health. Schaengold is a veteran healthcare executive with more than 25 years of senior leadership experience, primarily at academic medical centers and safety-net hospitals similar to Memorial. It is anticipated that Schaengold will join Memorial in late May. "I'm looking forward to the opportunity to lead an outstanding organization like Memorial Health," said Schaengold. "Memorial is a recognized leader for its commitment to compassionate healthcare, patient safety, and medical education. I am honored to become a member of the Memorial team and to help lead the organization to future successes in terms of clinical excellence, financial performance, and community service." Schaengold currently serves as CEO of University Hospital, a 378-bed academic medical center associated with the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University. He is also senior vice president for hospital affairs at SUNY. University Hospital annually averages 17,000 patient admissions, 52,000 emergency room visits, and 200,000 outpatient visits. The facility employs 3,500 people. During his tenure there, Schaengold led a $140 million expansion and renovation that includes a new 70-bed children's hospital. "The Board is delighted to have a leader with Phil's credentials joining our organization," said Bill Daniel, chairman of the Memorial Health Board of Directors. "We had many outstanding candidates to choose from, and we believe that he has the vision and business acumen necessary to help Memorial succeed in these challenging times. In addition, his experience and understanding of academic medical centers will no doubt benefit Memorial in our partnership with Mercer University School of Medicine." Schaengold has both a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Cincinnati, and a Juris Doctor from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University. He was selected to lead southeast Georgia's only teaching and research hospital following a six-month, nationwide search that yielded more than 150 candidates. The search committee narrowed the field to 11 qualified individuals for face-to-face interviews, and from these meetings, identified six candidates for additional consideration. Schaengold was chosen from the field of six. Memorial University Medical Center is a two-state healthcare organization serving a 35-county area in southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina. The system includes its flagship hospital, a 530-bed academic medical center; Memorial primary and specialty care physician networks; a major medical education program; business and industry services; and NurseOne, a 24-hour call center.
