Steven L. Carpenter, M.D., FACP, Elected Master Fellow in the American College of Physicians

(October 20, 2015) – The American College of Physicians has advanced Steven L. Carpenter, M.D., FACP, to the level of "Master,” the highest designation given by the organization.

The Mastership of the American College of Physicians honors a small group of highly distinguished fellows of the college, nominated by peers and colleagues, for significant contributions to medical science or the art of medicine.

Carpenter is a graduate of Georgia State University and attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Emory University and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Michigan. In 1996, he joined the Center for Digestive & Liver Health in Savannah, where he is a senior partner.

Carpenter was director of the internal medicine residency program at Memorial University Medical Center from 2006 through 2011. He is currently chair of the department of internal medicine for Mercer University School of Medicine’s Savannah campus; professor of medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine; and clinical assistant professor at the Medical College of Georgia.

Carpenter was raised in Reynolds, Georgia, in Taylor County (population 400). He has been married to Deborah Taylor Carpenter for 26 years and they have five children.

Masterships will be presented in May at the American College of Physicians Convocation Ceremony, in Washington D.C.
