October is National Pregnancy Loss and Infant Death Awareness Month and Memorial Health for Women will honor those babies at Walk to Remember on Saturday, October 14, at Tom Triplett Park in Pooler. Parents who have lost a baby during pregnancy or shortly after birth are invited to attend in memory of their children.
Throughout the month, parents, health professionals, and friends across the U.S. will participate in similar remembrance walks. The event raises awareness about perinatal grief and ensures parents receive sensitive care after the death of their baby. It is not a fundraiser.
Diane Youmans, MSN, R.N., coordinator of the perinatal bereavement program at Memorial Health, says Walk to Remember brings together parents who share a common grief. “Losing a child during pregnancy or right after birth is not something most parents can talk about with their friends and family,” she said. “This event gives them a safe place to share their stories and remember their child.”
Walk to Remember begins at 6 p.m. with memory-making activities for adults and children. A brief program follows at 6:30 with prayer, a responsive reading, open sharing, and a walk through the park. Refreshments will be served afterward.
