Memorial Health Sports Medicine works with athletes at contracted locations to prevent and treat sports-related injuries. Our team is made up of certified and licensed athletic trainers working under the direction of medical director and orthopaedic surgeon, Spencer Wheeler, M.D.

Memorial Health Sports Medicine provides athletic trainers to the Savannah Chatham County Public School System, Calvary Day School, Savannah Christian Preparatory School, Bethesda Academy, and the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Each certified and licensed athletic trainer has:

  • A bachelor’s degree in sports medicine or a related field from an accredited four-year institution
  • Certification as an athletic trainer by the Board of Certifications for Athletic Trainers
  • A license to practice as an athletic trainer in the State of Georgia
  • Certification in CPR, AED, and first aid from the American Heart Association

Each certified and licensed athletic trainer is able to:

  • Assist coaches to ensure that all medical paperwork is received by student athletes prior to sports participation
  • Provide healthcare coverage for practice and competitive athletic events for multiple sports
  • Perform a medical assessment if an injury occurs during an athletic competition and treat or refer accordingly
  • Help student athletes and their families through procedures such as X-rays, bone scans, surgery, or physical therapy
  • Work with student athletes, parents, and coaches to ensure excellent care through the return-to-play process

Memorial Health Sports Medicine is also available to assist with the following services:

  • CPR/AED/first-aid instruction and certification through the American Heart Association
  • Pre-participation examinations for student athletes
  • Coverage for sporting events
