Pulmonary Services

Whether you have a short-term respiratory illness or a chronic lung condition, we are fully equipped to diagnose and treat conditions of the lungs or respiratory tract in both adults and children. Our services include:

Bronchoscopy

This examination enables our physicians to see your airways directly using a bronchoscope. This device includes a flexible tube that is inserted through your mouth or nose, a light source and a camera that provides an actual image inside your airway.

Bronchial Thermoplasty

For asthma sufferers whose condition is not responding adequately to medicines, your physician may use a bronchoscope to apply heat to the walls of the airway. This procedure keeps muscles from constricting the airway.

Lung Cancer Screening

We employ a range of specialized imaging and laboratory tests to thoroughly evaluate patients at risk for lung cancer.

Lung GPS Technology (SuperDimension)

Instead of an invasive surgery to biopsy the lungs, we use this less invasive procedure. The technology allows us to navigate deep into your airways with an advanced bronchoscope to reach and biopsy suspicious growths.

What is lung GPS technology?

Just as your car’s GPS technology is able to guide your road trip, lung GPS technology guides your physician as he or she navigates your airways. Lung GPS is a specialized bronchoscope to investigate lung lesions or suspicious areas. Also called electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB), the technology used at Meadows Health is the Medtronic superDimension navigation system.

When is lung GPS recommended?

If a lung lesion (an abnormal spot or structure within your lungs) has been detected, your physicians may use lung GPS to determine the nature of the lesion. This technology lets your doctor evaluate your condition without a more invasive surgical procedure.

What is the procedure for a lung GPS?

The patient is positioned on an electromagnetic panel and placed under general anesthesia, meaning he or she is unaware as the procedure is being performed. The physician then inserts the superDimension bronchoscope through the patient’s nose or mouth and into the airways. The bronchoscope has a special sensor that provides the physician with a 3-dimensional “roadmap” to guide the bronchoscope to the lesion’s location. The device then provides visual information and can take a biopsy of the lesion.

What are the results of a lung GPS?

Lung GPS helps us diagnose lung cancer earlier, so that patients can begin treatment as soon as possible. If the system helps to identify a benign condition, some patients may be able to avoid surgery altogether.

Oxygen Saturation/Oximetry

We measure the amount of oxygen in your bloodstream, which gives us useful information about how well your respiratory system is functioning.

Pulmonary Function

Our fully outfitted pulmonary function lab lets us measure your airflow, lung capacity, and other critical characteristics of your respiratory system.

<2>Radiology Services

From X-rays and CT scans to MRIs, Meadows Health provides our pulmonology team with all the imaging technology needed to fully evaluate your condition.

Thoracentesis

If you are suffering from a pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs), a physician uses a special catheter, inserted into the chest wall, to suction off the excess fluid.

Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Working in conjunction with the Meadows Health Wellness Center, this comprehensive program is designed to improve the quality of life for those suffering from heart or pulmonary disease.
